Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
