No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
