This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
